Gary Bettman was openly defied by a player and now he may not even be able to fine him for his actions due to the NHL rule book.

Bettman Defied By Dermott

Last offseason, Gary Bettman made it clear he did not want any controversy so he decided to ban Pride Tape. Many players were unhappy with this decision and last night defenseman Travis Dermott openly defied Bettman by using Pride Tape on the shaft of his stick.

I just noticed Travis Dermott is quietly using @PrideTape tonight! This is what allyship looks like folks! #Yotes #HockeyISforEveryone

Everybody now thinks that Bettman will hand Dermott a hefty fine but the NHL rule book may have protected Dermott from any fine.

Dermott Did Not Violate A Rule

Rule 10.1 of the NHL rule book reveals that players are allowed to use tape of any color which means Pride Tape should be allowed under the NHL rule book.

Adhesive tape of any color may be wrapped around the stick at any place for the purpose of reinforcement or to improve control of the puck

Dermott, by rule, is permitted to use whatever color tape he wants... and this wasn't part of any special night event.

It is unknown what Bettman will do following this revelation but we are all but certain that Bettman will try to do his best to ensure that Dermott pays for defying him.
