The Oilers are likely the most desperate team in the NHL right now. Many expected this team to be competing for, if not winning, the pacific division. Many thought that not only would they finish the season atop the division, but they would be favorites to win the Stanley Cup. Now their season hangs in the balance as Ken Holland attempts to jump start his team.
By far the single biggest reason for Edmonton's struggles this year has been their goaltending. Both Jack Campbell and Stuart Skinner have been horrifically bad and now the former is not even on the team any more. Calvin Pickard was called up from the AHL but head coach Jay Woodcroft went with Skinner anyways as the Oilers lost to the historically bad Sharks last night.
"I would pay the moon, the stars, the sun, I'd even bring in one of the three wise men, throw them in the deal to be able to get Jeremy Swayman from Boston."
The Oilers are truly desperate for a goalie at this point. Almost any goalie on an active NHL roster would likely be an upgrade on the current Skinner-Pickard tandem. As such, Ken Holland has certainly been working the phones around the league, not just with Boston, looking for a solution. Jordan Binnington, Jusse Saros, and Jake Allen are among the names that have been linked to the Oilers in some way.
