Today a new report from TSN's Chris Johnston addressed the future of Jake Guentzel in Pittsburgh. According to Johnston uncertainty in contract negotiations has clouded Guentzel's future in major uncertainty.
Guentzel is in the last year of his contract with the Penguins with an AAV of 6 million. He will also be entering his 30s next season which makes an extension have more risk.
Jake Guentzel has been a fantastic piece in the top six for the Penguins for several seasons now. He has great chemistry with Sidney Crosby and can fill many roles. However, on an expiring deal heading toward the wrong side of 30 years old makes an extension incredibly risky.
Guentzel is also having a career year when it comes to points. As of now, Guentzel is projected for 93 points a significant increase from his previous high. This will surely drive the price of his contract up exponentially.
Unless Guentzel is willing to take a discount to stay in Pittsburgh his days with the Penguins could be numbered. The Penguins are struggling and have very little draft capital this season due to bringing in players like Erik Karlsson.
Jake Guentzel's value is likely at an all-time high and could be used to bring in significant future assets to help keep the Penguins playoff window open.
