You know things are bad when Sean Avery calls you barbaric. The former NHL agitator is shocked at the smelling salts routine of Alexander Barkov of the Florida Panthers and thinks Barkov's a legend for doing it.

A Whole New Level

While on a podcast watching footage of the last game of the series between Florida and the Carolina Hurricanes, Avery could not believe it when Barkov takes the smelling salts and puts them up to his eyes.

"Alexander Barkov has taken the smelling salts game to a whole new level. He hit his eyes!," said Avery. "That is the most barbaric thing I've ever seen from an athlete."

"Alexander Barkov right now has just cemented himself as an absolute legend. All these little games, Trix are for kids, mustard packs. You want to be a man? You hit the smelling salts in your eyeballs!"

Smelling salts on NHL benches are very common. Waving it around in front of your eyeballs is not. Avery and his co-hosts were quick to point out this was an intentional thing on Barkov's behalf and not an accident. He made sure he did both eyes.

Does it Actually Do Anything?

I'm not sure waving smelling salts in front of your eyes would have any kind of impact on your game. That said, whatever Barkov is doing is working, and he should stick to whatever routine he has. In the meantime, I really don't expect this to catch on.
