Life isn't easy as a Leafs fan, and news like this is what makes it worse. When you get your hands on a generational goal scoring talent, you hope they stay 100% healthy all of the time, but I juries aren't always preventable. This, however, just hurts for Toronto fans.
Surgery on the Table for Matthews
Look away, Leafs fans.
NHL insider Chris Johnston broke the news recently of Matthews apparent injury, and brought even worse news that it might require extensive treatment to fix it. He spoke about the issue recently in an interview, and it's not pretty.
I know for a fact that he (Auston) was injured. And I know that they are still working out his treatment plan and I don't think surgery is totally off the table.' - Chris Johnston
That's probably the last thing you want to hear as a Leafs fan, when it seems like so much of Toronto's success depends on Matthews.
What Now?
While it could be nothing, and his injury could be gone by the start of next season, Leafs fans should start preparing themselves for an Austin Matthews-less 2023-24 season. In the event that his injury requires surgery, he could be facing a long-term recovery plan that would keep him out for an extended period of time.
