The Calgary Flames came into 2023-24 looking to sell some of their big UFA's, and after moving Tyler Toffoli and Nikita Zadorov, it appears that more than just that group may be available.
Markstrom on the trade block?
After a tremendous bounce back season that's seen him post a 2.68 GAA and a .908 save percentage, it appears that former Vezina Finalist Jacob Markstrom could be on the move.
"But teams aren't calling Calgary only to inquire about his pending UFAs. Conroy has also generated interest in some of his players with term remaining on their contracts, including goaltender Jacob Markstrom." Pagnotta said.
He added, "To date, Conroy has not approached Markstrom or his agent Pat Morris about the possibility of waiving his NMC. I'm told that will only happen if the Flames receive an offer they deem acceptable. There is belief out there that Markstrom would consider a trade to a contender, but that has not been confirmed on my end."
That from David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period who has revealed that the 33-year old is certainly not untouchable as the Flames potentially look to re-tool around their young core.
Plenty of league interest around goaltenders
Pagnotta however didn't reveal who the teams were that called Calgary, but with squads like Toronto, Edmonton and New Jersey all looking for elite goaltending help ahead of a playoff run, there's bound to be plenty of interest.
It's tough to see what his value is, as he is 33-years of age and has $6 million AAV remaining on two more years of his deal, but if Calgary retain salary and package him with one of their UFA's (Tanev, Hanifin, Lindholm), a deal could certainly be out there.
