With the Stanley Cup Final fast approaching, it's also time for some fanbases to think about their team's upcoming offseason. That includes Dallas Stars fans, who are fresh off the sting of losing the Western Conference Final to the Vegas Golden Knights in six games. According to Elliotte Friedman, one of their players is a prime buyout candidate this summer.
Ryan Suter, at 38 years old, is deep in the twilight of his career, and his cap hit comes at a total of $3.65 million according to CapFriendly. He was previously bought out by the Minnesota Wild in 2021, where he'd been signed to a whopping 13-year contract at an AAV of more than $7.5 million per season in 2012.
Following poor performances in the playoffs this season, it's not hard to imagine why Suter could be a viable buyout candidate, even if the Stars would have to retain salary. He'd save the team close to $3 million for the first two years of being bought out (making for a cap hit of just under $800,000), though the cap hit would rise to $1.5 million for the final two years. No player has ever been bought out twice in the salary cap era.
