In a game between the Cleveland Guardians and Chicago White Sox, a fight broke out in the sixth inning between Cleveland's José Ramrez and the White Sox's Tim Anderson.
The fight started after Ramirez safely reached 2nd base, guarded by Anderson. Ramrez appeared visibly upset by Anderson, who held his glove on Ramrez's back after the attempted tag, which appeared to be the source of agitation. After a few words were had, Anderson dropped his glove, signaling a fight with Ramrez, who knocked out Anderson with a right punch, before a bench clearing managed to break the two apart. White Sox RHP Michael Kopech had to hold back Ramrez from continuing against Anderson, who had hit the ground from the punch.
Both Anderson and Ramrez were ejected from the game, as well as Guardians manager Terry Francona, White Sox Manager Pedro Grifol, Guardians 3B Coach Mike Sarbaugh, & Guardians star Closer Emmanuel Clase.
Anderson, 30, has 1HR and 19RBI in 87 Games for the White Sox, with a slash line of .244/.285/.292 with an OPS of .576. A down year from 4 consecutive season with a .300+ BA, starting with an MLB leading .355 in 2019. Anderson is also a 2x All-Star.
Ramrez, 30, has a Guardians leading 18HR this season, as well as 65RBI, with a slash line of .289/.360/.501 with a .861OPS. Ramirez is a 5x All-Star and a 4x Silver Slugger Winner.
MLB has not yet announced any suspensions for any of the involved players, although for their roles in the brawl, it will be likely that Anderson and Ramrez face disciplinary action.
The White Sox defeated the Guardians 7-4 and will end their series today, with Ramirez batting 3rd in the Guardians lineup, while Anderson is out for today's contest.
