Sharks general manager Mike Grier decided to add a veteran depth forward in Goodrow after his remarkable playoff run where he scored six goals after just 4 in the regular season. Notably, San Jose is where he began his NHL career, although at the time, Doug Wilson was still general manager of the team.
Goodrow signed a six-year deal with the Rangers after winning two Stanley Cups with the Tampa Bay Lightning. The contract includes a 15-team no-trade list. Reportedly, he had the Sharks on that list and was not willing to waive his no-move to go there. This is supposedly the reason the team put him on waivers, so the Sharks could claim him, bypassing the no-trade clause altogether.
It is not clear why the Sharks want Goodrow though. He was one of the worst regular players in the regular season and still has three years left at an exuberant 3.6 million dollar cap hit. Currently, he is the second-highest paid forward on the Sharks.
