The Carolina Hurricanes were rumored to be shopping forward Martin Necas for much of this summer. He was upset the team was not willing to play him at center leading to a fractured relationship. Despite the chaos of this summer reports have confirmed today that Martin Necas signed an extension with the Hurricanes.
With the extension signed NHL insider Frank Seravalli opened up and revealed that two teams made a major push to acquire Martin Necas. He even confirms the trade package offered by one of the teams.
This afternoon a new report from Frank Seravalli revealed a pair of trade partners that tried to make a Martin Necas trade happen. The first was the Buffalo Sabres who had a potential deal in place but Martin Necas refused to sign an extension with them.
The next is the Winnipeg Jets who offered top young players Cole Perfetti and Rutger McGroarty along with a draft pick. In this case, things fell apart due to the Carolina Hurricanes just flat-out rejecting the trade.
This trade would have been fair value in return for Martin Necas but would have taken the Carolina Hurricanes further away from being an immediate contender. Now with the extension of Martin Necas they at worst get a two-year rental of a player they know can be successful for them.
If all goes well the two sides could work out their differences and Martin Necas could sign a long-term extension. If not there will always be suitors willing to pay similar prices in a trade for Martin Necas.
