Most hockey fans are happy enough to exclusively follow the NHL, but there are, of course, other professional hockey leagues that exist, including one in Cuba, that happens to be looking for players.
Recent reports have indicated that the Cuban Ice Hockey Federation is actively searching for players with Cuban heritage, they are accepting anyone with Cuban heritage as far back as grandparents to join them to represent the nation of Cuba on an international scale.
The Cuban Ice Hockey Federation is participating in an upcoming tournament in August 2024. They are looking for any capable players who have the appropriate lineage to reach out to them. Here is the Instagram post announcing their search, and the contact info for any potential players:
If you're a player with Cuban heritage and looking to represent Cuba internationally at a tournament in Florida in August, message @cuba_ice_hockey with proof of your documentation, or email cubaicehockey@gmail.com
It might seem unlikely that Cuba will put together a team capable of competing in this international tournament, but the NHL has seen the occasional Latino player, including Scott Gomez, Bill Guerin and Al Montoyal, who was the first Cuban-American NHL player.
Cuba's decision to put together a team is a good sign that hockey is continuing to grow internationally. The Latino population is currently at an all-time high in the US, meaning that there are definitely a few eligible players with Cuban heritage, who currently have the rare opportunity to compete at the international level.
Best of luck to Cuba in putting together a gold medal winning team.
