The NHL finalized a controversial decision that will change the landscape of the NHL for years to come.
NHL To Decentralize The Draft
The NHL Draft has been one of the biggest events on the NHL calendar for years now.
Players, teams, and fans come in from all over the country for one weekend where everyone in the hockey world collides.
This will all be changing now. The NHL has decided to decentralize the draft moving the team personnel to remote locations.
NEWS: The NHL has issued a memo to teams saying that there was majority support for a shift to a decentralized draft. Still not clear if it will happen in 2024 and there are a lot of logistics to work out.
The NHL has once before done a remote draft for the 2020 NHL Draft. This process was a very long draft and had a few flaws that will need to be worked out if it is the way of the future.
The New NHL Draft
According to reports the new version of the NHL Draft will look similar to the NFL or NBA drafts. This likely means fewer players in attendance and less fan access to the event.
As of now, it is not known if this will be in effect for the 2024 Draft or begin in 2025. Regardless the NHL and its fans are in for a big change when it comes to the NHL Draft and its presentation.
