Jets Fate In Winnipeg Now Known For Sure
Many began to speculate about the Jets future in Winnipeg after the team shared some troubling attendance numbers early in the season. Now their fate has been confirmed.
Jets Owner Discusses Staying In Winnipeg
NHL insider Darren Dreger sat down with Jets part-owner Mark Chipman to discuss the team's future in Canada's coldest city. What he said should make Jets fans feel a little more relaxed.
Dreger: "Is there any real threat of a sale, a relocation if this can't get turned around?"
Chipman: "No"
Chipman continued by discussing the attendance issues and why he thinks it will not be a major concern going forward.
"I can see how somebody might, how you can ask that question, you know, because it happened once is it a concern it could happen again because you're the smallest market. I'd say Not on our watch'. We've been doing this far too long. We got into this for the very reason, for that heartbreak that you describe. It was that very emotion that brought us into this, that kept us in the fight to get a building built and then to acquire a team again. And then to have ten years of sellouts and two years of challenge brought on by a global pandemic. It would be a little extreme for us to say Oh gee we're not sure this works anymore'."
NHL Media Takes Closer Look At Jets Attendance Issue
The Spittin' Chiclets podcast was the first to point out the low attendance figures coming out of Winnipeg. Paul Bissonnette laid out a pretty convincing argument as to why the Jets should be able to fill their building, pointing out that it really is concerning that they are not doing so.
As the NHL continues to look to expand into new markets, the league may take a step back to look at how their current teams are performing. If it makes financial sense to move the Jets out of Winnipeg, perhaps the league would seriously consider that in a few years time. Afterall, the Jets have been relocated before.
