Canada's Four Nations Faceoff was off to a rough start following a shocking announcement by the Vegas Golden Knights on Sunday. It was announced that one of Canada's top blue-liners in Alex Pietrangelo has pulled out of the tournament.
However, Canada has too much talent to offer to fall short of filling his shoes. For instance, three players were pitched as possible substitutes and one of them came across as rather surprising.
Starting in with Drew Doughty of the Los Angeles Kings who has yet to play a game this season but is nearing a return. Considering Canada's desperate situation, Doughty's return could not have been better timed.
NHL expert Darren Dreger speculated that for the time being, Canada will have a plan of holding off a little longer to make a call so that perhaps fans can evaluate Doughty's readiness.
Next, Brandon Montour, who narrowly missed out in the first selection, is a strong bet. The one-time Florida Panther, nowadays with the Kraken, is churning out 23 points in 49 games for the current season.
Montour's new success in winning a Stanley Cup and consistent output makes him a strong bet for consideration.
Lastly, the Calgary Flair's stalwart blue liner, MacKenzie Weegar, could be Canada's best bet.
With a consistent and reliable output in his NHL career with both the Flames and Florida Panthers, Weegar's solidity at the blueline could serve Canada's purpose perfectly in exchange for Pietrangelo.
Canada will most likely choose to weigh these players' current form, experience, and adaptability under pressure in its face with the tournament approaching.
