Last night the Toronto Maple Leafs faced off against Atlantic Division rival the Florida Panthers in a heated game.
During the game, William Nylander found himself in a battle in front of the net with Panthers defenseman Nate Schmidt.
While battling in front William Nylander hit Nate Schmidt with a vicious cross-check to the back.
On the play William Nylander was given a double minor penalty but not ejected from the game.
After seeing the play many fans thought that William Nylander might face potential punishment from the NHL's Department of Player Safety.
This evening an official ruling has been handed down by the NHL regarding this hit and further discipline.
Tonight reports have confirmed that William Nylander has avoided a punishment from the NHL for his hit on Nate Schmidt.
According to the rules of the NHL, any fines or suspensions need to be handed down by 5 pm the day after the incident in question.
With the game being played yesterday and the 5 pm deadline passing without an announcement from the NHL it seems no punishment is coming to William Nylander.
While the play was clearly a penalty it was not serious and dangerous enough in the eyes of the NHL to reach the level of a suspension.
The Maple Leafs and Panthers will now continue on with their seasons and see one another at some point again.
When they next meet it will be interesting to see if Nate Schmidt seeks revenge on William Nylander.
