It is tradition around hockey, especially in the minor leagues, to have a night dedicated to charity where fans bring teddy bears to the game to throw on the ice once the home team scores their first goal of the game.
That is exactly what happened tonight as the Saginaw Spirit were visiting the Sarnia Sting.
After the Sting scored their first and only goal of the game, the teddy bears started to rain down on the ice.
Apparently, Spirit forward Michael Misa was not happy about it, as he shot one of the bears back into the crowd with his stick.
Unfortunately for him, the on-ice officials were paying attention, and they gave him a game misconduct for the offense, sending him to the locker room early.
Technically, by the OHL rule book, this should also mean Misa is getting an automatic one-game suspension.
We will have to wait and see tomorrow to see if the league actually enforces their rule or not as others have gotten away with similar incidents in the past.
That being said, this is still not a good look for a player who is in consideration to be a top-five pick in the draft.
Most public scouting agencies currently have Misa ranked between three and eight on their boards so you know this is a special player.
However, this is the kind of thing that NHL general managers pay attention to.
They always want to make sure that a player they draft will fit in with their team culture and will be a good presence in the locker room.
This is especially true for players that get drafted early in the first round.
After all, if you take a swing and a miss on a top-ten pick, that can set the entire franchise back a year if not longer.
It will be some time before we know the consequences of this incident, but if Misa falls outside the top ten, remember this story.
