Waivers has been increasingly surprising as of late, and that continued on Thursday when the Edmonton Oilers waived veteran Travis Dermott after playing a solid role for the team early in the year.
Unsurprisingly, he drew plenty of interest on waivers, with the Minnesota Wild picking up a win over the Oilers in this instance after falling to them 7-1 on Thursday night, as they now land the versatile veteran defenseman.
Things didn't slow down on Friday however, as the New York Islanders placed two immense talents on waivers, officially moving on from Pierre Engvall and Oliver Wahlstrom.
This comes as a major shock for New York as they continue to struggle early in the season, and with their offense faltering, it appears they're hoping that Engvall may be claimed so they can push to make another move to turn around this poor start to the season.
The 28-year-old Engvall has already spent a stint with the Bridgeport Islanders of the AHL this season, and after tallying just 6 points in 20 games this season, the team is ready to move on from him.
The more surprising of the two moves however is Wahlstrom, who was the 11th pick in the 2018 NHL Draft, and after struggling to catch on in the Islanders system, the 24-year-old is now up for grabs.
Out of the two, it's much more likely that we will see interest in Wahlstrom in the coming days, as he still has great size and potential at the NHL level, and if he finds himself in a system better suited to offensive production, we could see this one day being a huge mistake for New York.
