Sidney Crosby will go down in history as one of the greatest players of all time, and potentially the best Penguin to ever step foot on the ice, but what does his future hold in Pittsburgh?
Kyle Dubas addresses the future of Sidney Crosby
The Penguins made the move to sell Jake Guentzel at the recent trade deadline, and with the core of Crosby, Malkin and Letang all ageing, some suggested that a rebuild could be in order for the Penguins.
If that was the case, it would mean the end of Crosby in Pittsburgh, as he'd likely be traded this summer, but now, General Manager Kyle Dubas has addressed the situation, and 87's future as a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins.
«Sure, I think that will be a private discussion with Sid, myself and (agent) Pat Brisson once the season is over,'' Dubas said.
«But I think everyone's been pretty clear on where they stand on the fact everyone would like to see him end his career in Pittsburgh and it's my intention that in those years that we're back and definitively contending.''
Dubas would go on to say that he would lean on Crosby for his opinion on how to proceed going forward, as he means so much to the city, the team and the fans in Pittsburgh.
«I think you'd be remiss not to seek his opinion and how he's feeling,'' Dubas said. «Obviously he's done so much for the city of Pittsburgh and for the Penguins. I want his opinion, I value his opinion.
«We may not always agree and I might have to do things in the short run he disagrees with.''
This doesn't sound like a team that's ready to trade their captain to move towards a rebuild, and with Crosby's contract coming up in the summer of 2025 at the age of 37, they'll have some big decisions to make.
Ultimately though, it appears that Dubas is intent on putting together a team that can go on one last run under Crosby, and if he can play out his career as a Penguin, he will likely be remembered as the greatest player in franchise history.
