It seems that over time, the hip check has fallen out of style in the NHL, but one veteran player, Radko Gudas, seems to be keeping the hip check alive when he recently performed the rare move against Brandon Tanev.
Radko Gudas, an NHL veteran who currently plays for the Anaheim Ducks, is one of the few NHL players who still uses the hip check. He occasionally uses the move, but every time he does, he reminds everyone that he has truly mastered the art of the hip check.
The Seattle Kraken faced off against the Anaheim Ducks on Friday night. During the game, fans got to witness Gudas perform the hip check. Brandon Tanev, from the Anaheim Ducks, was Gudas' latest target. Gudas punished Tanev for cutting through the neutral zone, instead of using a traditional check, he decided to go for the hip check, which sent Tanev flying through the air.
The replay shows that Tanev was bracing himself for a regular body check, but was instead surprised by the use of the unorthodox hip check.
Although Tanev was definitely confused during the hit, he should be somewhat pleased that he was selected to be the victim of a check that not many players can say they've experienced. It is always nice to see a veteran player like Radko Gudas remind players and fans that although it is an uncommon move, the hip check is still alive and well.
