Ovi posed for a picture with some friends after a game of pickleball. While he's always been a power forward with a big frame, it is clear from the picture that he has putt on a few pounds. Hockey Reference currently has him listed at 238 pounds, which is large enough to begin with, but it appears as though he's topped that number this summer.
To be fair to Ovi, father time is undefeated and he is certainly getting up there in age. He will be turning 39 next season as he continues to try and set a new all-time goal record. Some fans have given him a pass this summer as he is certainly coming to the end of his career anyways. The Capitals captain has two years left on his contract, after which he will likely retire at the age of 40.
Many fans made jokes at the great eight's expense following the picture. One fan joked that he would replace Joey Chestnut at the annual 4th of July hot dog eating contest. The world-renown competitive eater was banned from the event after he accepted a sponsorship from another brand.
At this point, Gretzky has already won a Stanley Cup. It appears unlikely that he will win another, so the main focus now is the all-time goal record. He currently sits just 41 goals behind Gretzky for the title. He's been capable of scoring that many in a single season in the past, but he failed to hit the 40-goal mark last season. Be sure to tune in next season to see if the NHL history books get rewritten.
