It wasn't a bit surprising when the NHL called for Tom Wilson to have an in-person hearing after he high-sticked Noah Gregor of the Toronto Maple Leafs. The play, though was called a penalty on the ice, went under the radar during the game, meaning none of the Leaf players took particular exception to the incident.
However, after the game, it appeared the NHL wasn't a fan. They called for an in-person hearing for Wilson, which resulted in a 6-game suspension. Now, Wilson and the Capitals have determined they will not appeal the suspension, a surprising move.
Wilson has a history of suspension, which is likely why he did not want to appeal the high stick. The appeal process is also fairly broken, as the decision goes straight to Gary Bettman, who more than likely would just support his Department of Player Safety instead of making them look bad.
Leaf fans should be happy that another team is getting justice for what happened during the game, as they are one of the most suspended teams despite having a reputation for being soft.
The Capitals are in an important stretch for their season, as they are battling every game for the right to play in the playoffs. Hopefully, they won't miss Wilson too much, who has 17 goals and 15 assists on the season.
