Earlier this month New York Islanders defenseman Mike Reilly suffered a scary-looking injury in Buffalo against the Sabres that ended up with him being helped off the ice by teammates and trainers.
Mike Reilly was eventually diagnosed with a concussion and began his road towards recovery. Unfortunately today it was revealed another health problem was discovered during his recovery.
A new statement released by the New York Islanders and GM Lou Lamoriello has confirmed that Mike Reilly will be out for several months due to a heart condition that was just discovered.
After suffering the concussion Mike Reilly underwent other tests that players do when going through the concussion protocol.
One of those tests was an echocardiogram which showed that Mike Reilly will need to undergo immediate heart surgery.
Luckily it seems as though the condition was caught early enough that Mike Reilly can return to playing hockey after having the procedure and going through recovery.
With that said according to GM Lou Lamoriello that recovery could end up taking several months before Mike Reilly can return.
Before his injury, Mike Reilly had become a staple of a great New York Islanders defense in his first full season with the team.
Before arriving to the Islanders partway through last season Mike Reilly was with the eventual Stanley Cup Champion Florida Panthers.
Mike Reilly will now embark on his recovery process after having heart surgery. As he recovers we wish him and his family all the best.
