Considered for many years one of the best goaltenders in the league that was just overshadowed by a poor Anaheim Ducks team, it sounded like Gibson was tired of being on a rebuilding team and wants to play some playoff hockey like he deserves.
Gibson is turning 29 next month and is currently signed for 5 more seasons at a very reasonable cap hit of $6,400,000. What makes him even more appealing for teams now is the Anaheim Ducks stated that they would retain salary on Gibson if it meant a higher return. Someone with the potential of Gibson at a cheaper cap hit is going to bring in a huge payday for the Ducks.
One team that has been in desperate need of a star goaltender for years has been the Edmonton Oilers. They made it all the way to the Western Conference Finals this past season with 40 year-old Mike Smith in the net, who in his defence, played very well through the first 2 rounds, but fell apart in the WCF.
It was announced at the trade deadline that the Oilers had a high interest in Marc-Andre Fleury, but apparently he blocked a trade using his no-trade-clause because he did not consider the Oilers a legit contender.
Now we are hearing from NHL insider Mark Spector that the best goalie available on the trade block is not interested in the Edmonton Oilers either.
