In their heyday, the Detroit Red Wings were renowned for their ability to identify and cultivate talent from within their organization. However, in recent years, the team has encountered difficulties in developing their draft picks beyond the first round. Despite a history of success in nurturing prospects, the Red Wings have struggled to maintain their once-unquestioned authority over their young players.

Previously, the team had a well-established system in place that featured an internal cap which ensured that prospects would sign and go through the Red Wings' development process. This system had proven successful for the team in the past, resulting in the emergence of several talented players who went on to achieve great success in the NHL.

However, it appears that this structure is slowly starting to fade away. According to reports from Inside The Rink, the Red Wings will not be signing their 2019 2nd round pick, Robert Mastrosimone. This news suggests that the team is no longer able to retain the same level of control over their prospects, and that players may be starting to question the value of the Red Wings' development process.

This is a significant development for the Red Wings, who have relied heavily on their ability to draft and develop players in-house in order to maintain competitiveness in the NHL. Without a strong development system in place, the team may struggle to remain competitive in the years to come. The news about Mastrosimone is therefore cause for concern, and highlights the need for the Red Wings to reevaluate their approach to player development if they hope to continue to succeed in the NHL.

This is a statement from ASU's coach:

He's playing the waiting game and seeing what's going to be available as a free agent. There's a lot of teams that are interested in him, but it doesn't look like Detroit is going to happen. It's just a waiting game, but he has the option to come back. It's a good option, and he's open to it.
