Ryan Reaves is a breed going extinct in the National Hockey League. The last 'true enforcer' in the league, who was brought into New York to protect some of the young stars on the team and provide some intimidation when it comes to the playoffs.
When the Rangers lost to the Lightning in 4 straight games in the Eastern Conference Finals, Reaves made this comment about his future in the NHL:
I think a lot of my summer is just trying to get as fast as I can... I've got to keep up with these young guys now.
But it sounds like that offseason training may not keep him in New York after all. Reaves put up 5 goals 13 points in 69 games this year and 0 points in 18 playoff games and found himself a healthy scratch in a few games.
Reaves is signed for one more season with the Rangers at a $1.75 million AAV, but according to the New York Posts Sports, the New York Rangers GM Chris Drury is considering the possibility of buying out the final season of Reaves' contract.
A buyout would save the Rangers $583,334 in cap space, which doesn't sound like much, but with 7 UFA's and 2 RFA's currently needing contracts, that $583k could make a huge difference, especially considering big names like Kakko, Copp and Strome are among those free agents.
