John Tortorella Makes A Questionable Move For The Flyers' Captaincy
Flyers head coach John Tortorella is known as someone who is not afraid to try unconventional tactics even if he gets negative attention for it. This year he continues to make interesting moves.
Tortorella Makes Unusual Move With Flyers Captaincy
The Flyers will not have a captain this year. That by itself is not the most unusual thing to happen in hockey. Teams often go seasons without naming a captain. What is unusual about this Flyers team though is that they will only have one alternate captain. Scott Laughton, who first got the "A" last season, will continue to be an alternate captain for the team. This time though, he will bear all the official on-ice duties a captain has as he is the only option. Tortorella discussed his interesting move.
"We're in no rush to put letters on people because I want to allow people to feel that they have the opportunity to say something. As I've always said, we have great athletes in our game, and they respect the hierarchy of the locker room. You start putting letters on people because you think you need to put letters on people; it may stunt some other people. So we're going to leave that wide open."
Flyers Comment On Leadership Situation
Several Flyers made statements about their leadership group following this unusual move from their head coach. Scott Laughton seemed to think the move was a good idea.
"It gives a guy like Joel Farabee an opportunity to step forward. I think we have a great group for that speak your mind and hold each other accountable."- Scott Laughton Flyers veteran Travis Konecny Also commented on the situation, expressing no concern about the decision.
"Guys know who and when to listen, (and) to which guys. Guys set examples on the ice. You still can sense the guys that are trying to lead. Letters or not, guys in here know."
It should be an interesting year for the Flyers as many expect them to be among the worst teams in the league.
