One of the biggest mistakes that people are giving Kyle Dubas a lot of flack for was the fact that he did not sign Auston Matthews to a max 8 year deal when he had the chance, instead he signed him to a 5 year deal, which walked him right into free agency as a UFA.

Including this season, Matthews has 2 years left on his deal and could be a free agent at the 2024 Free Agency, and what is becoming worrisome for Maple Leafs fans is that multiple NHL Insiders have now either said he isn't coming back to the Leafs or wont sign long term.

This summer NHL Insider Chris Johnston said he believes Matthews will sign a max term deal with the Leafs, but Elliotte Friedman doesn't agree whatsoever.

Friedman thinks that he might re-sign, but it wont be long term.

I think he's re-signing in Toronto, I don't necessarily think it will be a long-term extension but I think he will extend, but my caveat always was, the big concern is what if this thing goes off the rails?

They do have to monitor how Matthews feels, I don't have any reason to believe right now that he's unhappy or he's got a big problem or anything like that, but they constantly have to take his temperature.
