Many fans of the Calgary Flames were eagerly awaiting the announcement that was finally made on Sunday. This followed the end of top prospect Matthew Coronato's NCAA season with Harvard University on Friday night, which rendered him eligible to sign an NHL deal.
Amid rumors and concerns within the fan base that Coronato might refuse to sign with the team, it was noted that all college players have the option to become a college free agent if they do not sign. It appears that even members of the Flames' management team shared these concerns about potentially losing Coronato. This was revealed by Elliotte Friedman on this week's 32 Thoughts Podcast.
Elliotte Friedman on 32 Thoughts Podcast said he got the sense that there was worry in the #Flames fanbase about Matthew Coronato possibly not signing with Calgary because young players have had a difficult time getting in the lineup.
Friedman added that if the negotiations with Coronato had dragged into the week or longer, he would have felt those concerns might have been justified. Since Harvard lost on Friday and he signed on Sunday, there is confidence in him that he was told he was going to play.
Although he boasts an impressive coaching record, Sutter has a reputation for undervaluing young players and prospects in favor of relying heavily on veterans. As a result, reports have emerged that suggest Coronato will be gradually integrated into the Flames' lineup, rather than being thrust into the limelight straight away.
The signing of Coronato is a significant development for the Flames' future, as it will immediately activate the first year of his NHL contract. Given the high level of concern within the organization, it is difficult to envision Sutter returning as coach next season.
