We are coming up on a month since free agency opened and while we have seen most of the big names sign some large contracts, we still see some big names like PK Subban, Phil Kessel, Anton Stralman, Paul Statsny, Kyle Turris and the second best player available Nazem Kadri without contracts.
Kadri has been on a very team friendly deal for years now. Back in 2016 he signed a 6 year deal with an AAV of $4,500,000. While he did not produce like this season back in 2016 when he signed that deal, it was definitely a steal even at that point.
Fresh off winning the Stanley Cup, Kadri had a career year just at the right time, an unfortunate thing for the Colorado Avalanche, it was in his contract year. Kadri produced at a 100 point pace scoring 87 points in 71 games, and added another 15 points in 16 playoff games.
It was reported last week that he apparently signed with the New York Islanders, but a deal had not been made official yet until the Islanders were able to shed some cap space. Here we are a week later though and Kadri is still sitting in free agency. It was revealed what Kadri is asking for and it's definitely a large number that will be hard to fit under the cap for the Islanders who only have $11 million in cap space and will need to sign Mat Barzal to an extension next season.
