Calgary Flames announce new addition to NHL coaching staff and corresponding moves for AHL Wranglers
The Calgary Flames announced today that they have promoted Wranglers head coach Trent Cull to the NHL staff.
A couple of weeks ago, the Flames announced that assistant coach Brad Larsen would be stepping away from the team to attend to a family matter.
Larsen has been away from the team since, leaving the organization somewhat shorthanded on their coaching staff.
Today the team announced some changes to address that problem, promoting AHL Wranglers head coach Trent Cull to the NHL club.
He will serve as an interim assistant coach with the team for the time being. There is no timeline for Larsen's return.
Similarly, Wranglers assistant coach Joe Cirella is now serving as interim head coach for the club and former Flames assistant coach Martin Gelinas has joined the club as an assistant.
As part of these announcements, Flames general manager Craig Conroy also made a statement of support for Larsen.
He noted that the team's priority is still to always support the coach but that his absence did create a situation where they had to make some changes.
Presumably, Larsen will be able to return to his job if and when this personal matter is over with.
"Our priority is to provide Brad and his family with continued support during this period when they need it most. While Brad remains with his family, we have made these interim adjustments to our coaching staff to ensure our team and development program have the resources required to excel. Our organizational bench strength allows us to confidently make these moves without interruption to performance."
Hopefully, everything is going to be okay with Brad and his family. The House of Hockey family is sending our best thoughts and wishes to them in this scary time.
