Mooseheads owner comments on playoff exit and Jordan Dumais incident
The Halifax Mooseheads had a disappointing end to the 2023-24 QMJHL season. A suspension and injury to their star player and a first-round exit has their ownership group examining the future. Today the team's owner talked about the disappointment.
After a first-round playoff exit, the Halifax Mooseheads are looking ahead to next season. After an early loss in the playoffs, the Mooseheads are out of the QMJHL playoffs much sooner than expected. A new interview with the team's owner called the end of the season unacceptable.
Global News: How disappointed were you in this year's playoff run?
Simon: I don't have enough words to express the disappointment. It was shocking. I know we were down a few key players (like) Jordan Dumais and Jake Furlong but it's truthfully unacceptable. It's one way to lose but another way to go out the way we did, as well. I feel for our fans, I feel for everybody in Halifax. In a follow-up question the interviewer asked if the suspension and eventual injury to Jordan Dumais contributed to the loss. He was also asked how involved the team was in Jordan Dumais' suspension.
Global News: You mentioned how injuries and inconsistency was a factor, how much do you think the Jordan Dumais injury and off-ice incident impacted the team? What involvement did you have in his suspension?
Simon: The tricky situation, of course, with Jordan is you want to do two things. You want to make sure you do the right thing as an organization from a disciplinary standpoint and make sure you have communication with the league. But at the same time, you want to respect the players' privacy because you want to make sure he gets the support he needs. It was a very tough time for him, as well.
It sounds as though the Halifax front office and ownership group tried to handle the situation as good as they possibly could. They wanted to look out for the health and safety of Jordan Dumais while still holding him accountable.
In the end the Halifax Mooseheads are on their way to a likely rebuild with Jordan Dumais and other veteran players set to move to the next level.
