This afternoon the Detroit Red Wings have announced a surprising move ahead of the stretch run of the season. The team has decided to send down promising forward Jonatan Berggren to the AHL.

The Detroit Red Wings were expected to be a fringe playoff team heading into this season. As expected the Red Wings are right in the thick of the playoff race with around 10 games to go. With the team needing as many points as possible the front office made the difficult decision to send down Jonatan Berggren.

UPDATE: The #RedWings today assigned right wing Jonatan Berggren to the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins.

The former second-round pick has been a depth player in the Detroit Red Wings lineup while only being 23 years old. Despite his impressive play this season in limited action, Jonatan Berggren will likely spend the rest of the season in the AHL after playing 12 games in the NHL.Unfortunately for Jonatan Berggren over the last 5 games he had been a scratch in every single one. He will now head down to AHL Grand Rapids who are one of the best teams in the Central Division and likely heading for the Calder Cup Playoffs.

Red Wings looking to claw their way back into the playoffs

With Jonatan Berggren heading back to the AHL, the focus will shift back to the veteran players in Detroit looking to bring the Red Wings back to the playoffs. The Red Wings have not made the playoffs since 2016 after being one of the most dominant franchises in the NHL for almost two decades.

Now this new group of Detroit Red Wings is desperate to get back into the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
