The Detroit Red Wings have recalled goaltender Jack Campbell from the American Hockey League affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins on an emergency basis.
The move came on the heels of an announcement by the team on Friday that goalie Cam Talbot had reaggravated a recent lower-body injury that had kept him out for 10 days. Cam Talbot will not be available for Saturday's game against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Head coach Derek Lalonde confirmed that Ville Husso would start in goal against the Maple Leafs, and the team intended to recall a backup goalie from Grand Rapids. That selection is Jack Campbell.
Alex Lyon took part in a full practice Friday in his return from a lower-body injury and remains out until at least Wednesday.
Campbell had been reassigned to Grand Rapids a few weeks ago, after completing his stint in the NHL Player Assistance Program that he entered on Oct. 4 after his lone preseason appearance with the Red Wings.
Campbell signed a one-year, $775,000 contract with Detroit in July. He was a big signing for the Edmonton Oilers for the 2022-23 season as what was supposed to be their goalie.
That also worked out terribly as his contract was bought out. Now he gets a chance to prove himself with Detroit, and that begins with his emergency recall.
It remains to be seen whether Campbell will get a shot at taking the net for the Red Wings at any point going forward, or if he will simply be there as a backup until their other regulars return.
