At the end of the first round of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, the Montreal Canadiens did something nobody expected them to do, by drafting Logan Mailloux. The controversial young defenseman had asked teams not to draft him in the wake of his criminal conviction in Sweden, yet Marc Bergevin and the Habs did anyways. A lot of time has passed since then, but is Mailloux deserving of a shot at the NHL?
Bettman and Mailloux Will Meet Over the Summer
According to a recent report by reporter Renaud Lavoie, Gary Bettman and Logan Mailloux will have a meeting this summer to determine the prospect's eligibility to play in the NHL. Despite having signed an entry-level contract with Montreal already, Bettman has stated that Mailloux is not currently eligible to play in the NHL.
Bettman and the NHL will likely want to see if Mailloux has put in the proper work to better himself as a person before permitting him into the NHL, which is a privilege most hockey players will never see.
We'll wait to see what the results are this summer.
