One player that was looking to make an impact and possibly take over that second line center spot that was vacated by Nazem Kadri, was Alex Galchenyuk who was signed by the team for a Professional Try Out.
Galchenyuk was a 3rd overall pick by the Montreal Canadiens back in 2012, and while in his first few years it looked like he was going to be a break out star, putting up 40+ points on multiple occasions and even having a 30 goal season, Galchenyuk has never quite found his rhythm, and has been bouncing around from team to team.
It looked like at one point he had found a home in Toronto, but a bad giveaway in the playoffs which resulted in a goal against, sealed his fate with the Maple Leafs.
Unfortunately for Galchenyuk, his hopes of playing for the defending Stanley Cup Champions, has ended as he was released today from his tryout.

This might have been Galchenyuk's final chance at an NHL contract this season, let's hope another team gives him a shot.
